Why Divorce Rates Increase in the New Year — and Where to Find Support in New Jersey

Every January, there is a noticeable rise in people searching for information about divorce, separation, and emotional support. Mental health professionals and family law providers often refer to this time as “Divorce Season.” While this trend may seem surprising, it reflects a natural period of reflection, clarity, and decision-making that often comes with the New Year.

At In Tandem Therapeutic Services, LLC, we support individuals across New Jersey who are navigating divorce, separation, and co-parenting—especially during emotionally vulnerable times like the start of a new year.

Why Do So Many People File for Divorce in the New Year?

Reflection and Life Evaluation

The end of the year often prompts people to reflect on their relationships, emotional well-being, and future goals. For individuals in unhappy or high-conflict marriages, this reflection can lead to difficult—but honest—realizations about what is no longer working.

Holiday Stress and Relationship Strain

The holiday season can intensify existing marital issues. Financial pressure, family dynamics, unmet expectations, and emotional fatigue often push unresolved conflicts to the surface. Once the holidays end, many people finally feel ready to take action.

A Desire for a Fresh Start

The New Year symbolizes change and new beginnings. For some, filing for divorce is less about giving up and more about choosing emotional safety, growth, and long-term well-being.

Divorce Is an Emotional Process—Not Just a Legal One

Divorce impacts far more than marital status. Individuals often experience grief, anxiety, anger, shame, and fear—especially when children, co-parenting, or high-conflict dynamics are involved. Without proper support, these emotions can feel overwhelming and isolating.

This is why divorce therapy and support groups can be a crucial part of the healing process.
